In the spring of 2003, Jess raced his first mountain bike race in Temecula, California’s Vail Lake Classic after a rehabbing his second complete knee reconstruction. Soon after, he moved to the Midwest and worked his way through the mountain biking classifications of the Wisconsin Off Road Series. After winning the 2006 Sport class series, he finished 3rd in for his age group in the Comp classification in 2007 and made a 2008 Elite Class attempt. After a year in the Elite Class, he raced 2009 in the Comp series and found his way back to the podiums. Jess also competes in ultra-endurance events and took second place finishes in both the two-day, 70-mile Coeur d'Alene River Challenge in Idaho and in Spokane’s 2007 State 24 Hour championships competing in the two man class. He finished 210th in the 2008 Leadville 100. In 2009, he road 250 total miles in 24 hours and placed 7th overall in the men’s solo expert class at the 24 Hours of Nine Mile Woods event in Wausau, WI. In 2010, he hopes to be selected for a return to Leadville and will compete in a full WORS schedule. Jess lives in Delafield, WI with his wife Heidi and is the father of Halle (9), Kayden (6), and Kye (1).
